Say Hi and Introduce Yourself
« on: December 10, 2012, 03:53:44 PM »
Hi everyone,

I've started this thread to get some introductions going.  If you haven't posted anything on the board yet, this is a great place to say hi.  If you have posted, then say hi anyway.  :)

I'll go first.

Hi!  I'm SQLBrit, a SQL Server DBA from the land of Great Britain. I've got a fair few years experience under my belt but still have a great to deal learn, and I hope it stays that way. One of the things I love the most about working in our technology space is that every day brings with it opportunities to learn and grow. I currently work with Expedia Inc. and I'm a firm believer in the philosophy that The Best Database Administrators Automate Everything.

Who's next?

Hi all,

I'm Luke (@ClickRex) a Database Developer from Bristol, England.  Spent the last 3 years working with SQL with 2 of them in my current position at DocCom.Me (https://www.doccom.me/).

We're a start up and, as with most start ups, I'm a bit of a jack-of-all trades working with C# .NET, SQL Server, Javascript, SSRS, SSIS, Javascript and Node.js.

I tend to focus on application performance and business intelligence (A crazy mix!)

Hi Luke, great to have you here sir!

Being a jack-of-all trades is a brilliant thing for a Data Professional in my view. Makes for a more well rounded and versatile skill set. Heck, I used to be a Java Developer once upon a time (but keep that to yourself ;-) ), else the DEVs in my shop will have a field day.

App perf and BI, a crazy mix indeed and lots of fun I'm sure.

Hi Everyone,

I'm John, a DBA in the USA working for a company in the healthcare field. I've been a DBA for about 5 years, before that a SQL developer and Access report writer. I'm trying to learn all I can about BI as my company is starting to move in that direction. I'm looking forward to learning and sharing SQL knowledge from everyone.

Hi John, great to have you here.

Sounds like there's some interesting and exciting opportunities in your shop to play with, I mean develop with, new technology. Are you looking at the SQL Server BI stack or further afield to those dark arts such as Hadoop?

It's a great time to be learning BI in the SQL Server space that's for sure. It's seen a lot of growth in recent years, so much so that SQL PASS have spun off an entire separate conference in Chicago next year, the PASS Business Analaytics Conference.

Welcome to the forums my good sir!

Hi John,

We're staying with the Micorosft BI stack, at least for now. The requirements are still being fleshed out but I don't see that as changing. And I'm pushing my managers to send me to the PASS Business Analytics Conference, especially as our offices are in downtown Chicago! Much cheaper than flying me out to Seattle!  ;D

And thanks for hosting this forum.

Hi Anup! Darn it, I missed the opportunity to meet you at the Summit this year. Next time sir....

I'm toying with the idea of creating a Blogging category on the forums, for those considering starting to blog, as well as those who have already found their grove. I bet you could share some great advice.

I think back to when I first started blogging and how I found posts by the likes of Brent Ozar and Thomas LaRock a great help in getting started, not to mention inspiring. I recall Brent sharing some very detailed stuff, even on topics like choosing a domain name and hosting. I think it would be fantastic if we could inspire and support bloggers here.

Welcome to the community forums!

My name is David, @bigdavidjb, I'm a freelance MSSQL and Sage ERP consultant based in the North East of England, but currently spending quite a lot of time in London.

My todo list has not shrunk from this time last year, I still need to start my blog, I still need to tweet more, still need to meet more people from the SQL community and indeed get involved more, maybe I'll actually get there this year...

Hopefully we will get this forum moving with some great discussions and I look forward to getting to know you all abit.

Hi David,

You should try to time some of your visits for when the London SQL Server User Group or SQL Lunch is on.

I hear what you're saying about finding time for community investment (blogging, Twitter, <cough> forums) but I guarantee you that it's worth it. The trick is in keeping up that momentum. Hmm sounds like a possible post subject in the making....

Welcome to the forums!

I can only echo what Master SQLBrit has iterated with blogging, utilization of twitter, etc. I just want to encourage people who are not investing in time to take small steps in getting going if time is an issue. I went to PASS2011 and it was like someone kicked me in the rear and was telling me to get in the game. Blogging has become an outlet for me; I keep a journal going in OneNote of the ideas I have for blogging; my good friend Chris Shaw got me started on that. He also advised me that I needed to get involved on twitter; I got to admit pinging back and forth with the likes of Ozar, MasterBrit, Bertrand and all those guys was a little intimidating at first. Come to find out they put their pants on like the rest of us and are really cool down to earth guys.

I hope the longevity of these forms sustains itself and look forward to much encouragement, banter, help, etc as John grows the forum.

GAME ON
